Which side of Panama City Beach is right for your trip? PCB stretches 27 miles along the Gulf, and the vibe changes a lot depending on where you set up. Here’s how the areas of Panama City Beach actually feel once you’re there.
Can You Explore All Three in One Trip?
Short answer, yes. The drive from the far east end to the far west end takes about 40 minutes without traffic, and Front Beach Road runs the full length of the beach. Most guests base themselves in one area and take day trips to the other two.
A morning at St. Andrews State Park on the east end and an evening dinner at Firefly on the west side is a normal day for anyone with a car. The catch is that in summer, Front Beach Road slows to a crawl by mid-afternoon, so plan your longest drives before 11 AM or after 8 PM.
Central PCB Is for Walkers Who Want It All Close
Central PCB runs roughly from Middle Beach Road west to Pier Park, and it’s designed for guests who want to leave their cars parked. From most central PCB rentals, you can walk to the beach, Pier Park, the Russell-Fields Pier, and 20-plus restaurants within a 15-minute stroll.
Pier Park anchors the whole central experience. It sits at 600 Pier Park Drive and packs in 120+ stores like Target and Ron Jon Surf Shop, plus the SkyWheel, Margaritaville, Dave & Buster’s, and the Grand Pier Park movie theater. Live music runs at Tootsies most nights. The Russell-Fields Pier next door adds 1,500 feet of walkable pier for $3 or $8 to fish.

East PCB Is for Resort Access and Restaurant Lovers
East PCB centers on South Thomas Drive, home to the Shores of Panama Resort and Laketown Wharf, with quick access to Grand Lagoon’s charter fleet and waterfront restaurants. Most east side PCB rentals put you inside a full resort with lagoon pools, tiki bars, fitness centers, and covered parking.
The east side also delivers the best dining lineup on the beach. Capt. Anderson’s at 5551 N Lagoon Drive has been serving fresh Gulf catch since 1967, and Pineapple Willy’s next door to Shores of Panama draws crowds for the Jack Daniel’s ribs and live music on the pier deck. The east end also puts you closest to St. Andrews State Park, one of the best beach and paddling spots on the coast.

- Skip if: You need to walk to Pier Park or want the smallest crowds
West PCB Is for a Quieter Stay Near 30A
West PCB runs from Pier Park out toward Camp Creek and the 30A border. This is the quiet end of the beach, with fewer high-rise resorts, more single-family beach homes, and closer proximity to the slower-paced towns along 30A like Rosemary Beach, Seaside, and Alys Beach (about 15 to 25 minutes east).
Most west end PCB rentals trade the resort pool scene for private beach access, more sand between properties, and shorter walks to Camp Helen State Park. Firefly at 535 Beckrich Road is one of the best sit-down restaurants on the west end, serving a Southern-inspired menu in a lantern-lit garden setting. Rosemary Beach’s town center is a solid morning coffee run when you want a change of scenery.

- Skip if: You need to be within walking distance of shopping, arcades, or nightlife
What Locals Say About Each Area
Locals we work with tend to split it three ways. Families with young kids and grandparents tend to choose east-side resorts like Shores of Panama for their pool amenities and predictable structure. Couples and friend groups on a first PCB trip tend to stay central for the walkable Pier Park nightlife and shorter Uber rides. Repeat visitors who’ve done the touristy stuff usually book west for the space and quiet, then drive east or to the central area on nights they want the noise.
Another piece of local advice? Don’t underestimate distance. PCB looks small on a map, but 27 miles of beach adds up. A rental at the far west end is a 25-minute drive from Pier Park in normal traffic and 45 minutes when the beach traffic peaks. If Pier Park is your priority, don’t book west.
